Prof. R.B. Patankar was born in a small town Khamgaon (January 09, 1927) in Buldhana district of Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. Educated in a district place Nashik, he joined the Mumbai government educational service and taught English at colleges in Gujarat and Maharashtra. Appointed as Reader in English in 1964 in newly opened Department of English in Mumbai University, he worked there as Reader and Professor of English till his retirement in 1987. During this time, he popularized the subject Aesthetics in English and Marathi and encouraged students to write in Marathi and other Indian languages on Aesthetics and literary criticism. His pioneering book on Aesthetics in Marathi Saundaryamimansa won the Sahitya Akademi award in 1975 and the life-time award for his illustrious work was conferred on him by Maharashtra Foundation in 1998.
